The Topps Favorites — 1955 Edition

Today, we are going to examine my top five favorite cards from the legendary 1955 Topps set. This set is the shortest set in the history of Topps base sets at just 206 cards and it is the first set that Topps uses horizontal fronts and backs. Topps would do this again for 1956 and 1960. Without further adieu, here are my five favorite 1955 Topps cards in no particular order:

1955 Topps #194 Willie Mays

20120913-055317.jpgOnce again, one of my favorite players of all time "Topps" my list. Willie Mays was everything you could want in a ball player - hustled, had speed, and hit for tremendous power. Mays would go in to hit 660 home runs in his career and this card cracks my Top 5 list. One day I hope to own this card as I'm actively working on a 1955 Topps set that is currently 86% complete.

1955 Topps #47 Hank Aaron

20120913-095923.jpgThe best power hitter of all time period. Hammerin' Hank had 755 total home runs in his career and was idolized by millions of kids while I was growing up. This is another card I do not own yet, however, I'm sure I will someday as I get closer to completing my 1955 Topps set.

1955 Topps #123 Sandy Koufax

20120913-060718.jpgOne of the most feared and dominating pitchers of his era, Sandy was practically in a class all by himself. I have always wanted to own this rookie card of him but do not have one yet. This card is a must for anyone's top five list.

1955 Topps #164 Roberto Clemente

20120913-061059.jpgRoberto Clemente amassed exactly 3,000 hits in his hall of fame career and his talents made him one of the great baseball players of all time. Sadly, nearing the end of his baseball career, he died in an airplane crash while on a peace mission. He always represented class and respect on and off the baseball field. 1955 was his rookie card year and is a must to be included on anyone's top 5 list.

1955 Topps #2 Ted Williams

20120913-062730.jpgTed Williams once hit an astounding .406 in a season and is well known as arguably the best pure contact hitter baseball has ever seen. I do not own his 1955 Topps card yet but hope to one day soon. I consider this card a must to be included on my top 5 list.

And there you have it -- my 1955 Topps list of my 5 favorites. Do you like it? Don't like it? I would like to hear your opinions! 🙂
