As most of you by now, Topps recently released their newest highly-anticipated Heritage release with 2012 Topps Heritage High Numbers.
The company sold 1,000 sets as an online offering only. You can’t buy these sets anywhere else unless you buy them second handedly on places like EBay. The original price of these sets was $99.95 and can now be found online for around $175. When Topps first announced the high numbers, many thought that it would be very similar to the Topps Mini product that was offered as an online exclusive earlier in the year. That product provided pretty good value at $50. However, when Topps announce that the price was $99.95; many people complained that was too high for a set with just 100 cards and one autograph. I, myself, reserved judgment until I saw the complete autograph list. Once the checklist was released, then I thought $99.95 was too high. To me, this set should retail at $50 like the Topps Mini set. Unless the set sells for $50 or less, I will never own one. The appeal to the High Numbers set is of course the autographs. Topps announced that they are including red ink autos in the set which are hand numbered to 10. The biggest autographs in the set are Yu Darvish and Bryce Harper. They are a few other soon to be stars in the set that might be worth having such as Will Middlebrooks but for the most part, the autograph selection is very weak in my opinion.
I follow a Heritage fanatic on Twitter, @nhinds, and he ended up purchasing six sets of Topps Heritage High Numbers. Here are the actual pictures of his six autographs:
One of the worst autographs in baseball!
I would say that he did a lot better than average with that Will Middlebrooks red ink hit. Hopefully, he will be able to make a little profit off of his $600 purchase.
It is very disappointing to see that his Chris Getz had obvious quality control issues. (Will add picture of his card as soon as I hear back from @nhinds) In fact, several people are reporting that the autographs in the set are dinged up. Why is this? Well, for one, Topps included the auto at the end of the package. Secondly, Topps used a very thin cardboard box for packaging the cards. Do you remember the older Topps Traded sets of the 1980’s? The 2012 Topps Heritage High Number box is of the same size and quality as those are. There is no extra padding or other protection so there is no wonder that a lot of the autographs are reported as being damaged.
So what will Topps do about this? Nothing. Unless you contact Topps. Topps has said that do not have any extras set aside for quality control issues but they can send an auto from a different release to compensate for the damaged card. I would encourage anyone out there who received a damaged auto to contact Topps. They have worked with me on some quality control issues in the past and have met my expectations.
I hope that Topps has learned a lesson with this release. They should use better packaging and place the autographs in the middle of the set instead of on the end. They should have also not screwed up with the numbering. The regular set is numbered 1-500 and the high numbers are 576-675 due to a “production error” Other than these mistakes, the 2012 Topps Heritage High Numbers is still a solid product with rookie cards of Darvish and Harper. These rookies from this set have the lowest production numbers of any base set out there at 1,000 copies each. However, the price tag for the set is too high in my opinion so I will take my chances and hope that it goes down to around $50 this time next year.
