The 10 Best Cards From a 2013 Topps EIGHTY Case Break!!!

The thrill of opening a pack of cards and knowing you have pulled a card that is better than average. For everyone who has been in the hobby for a while, most have probably had this experience. The better the card, the greater the thrill. It’s what I call the “wow factor”. For me, the baseball card that provided me with the greatest “wow factor” was back in 2010 when I pulled a redemption autograph card of Stephen Strasburg limited to 10 copies. You wouldn’t believe what it sold for! Back in 2006, I started tracking my Top Ten pulls of the year. I call it my Hall of Fame and you can see my Top Ten lists by clicking the link at the end of this blog post. But first, you have to continue reading as this is very interesting...

Recently, I caught up with Brent Williams, better known as brentandbecca on Twitter and EBay, about his huge 2013 Topps Series One 80 case break. Yes, that’s right. Brent opened 60 jumbo cases and 20 hobby cases of this product! For those keeping score at home, that’s 266,400 Topps cards! When I found out about how many cases Brent was opening I began to wonder what cards would give him the biggest “wow factor”? Well, after days of ripping, sorting, listing, selling, and shipping...here is Brent’s Top Ten with a few of his comments included:

TOP TEN BIGGEST WOW FACTOR CARDS OUT OF BRENT’S 80 CASE BREAK!

#10 Chasing History Autograph Cal Ripken Jr. SP $199.50 – “I had the only one on eBay for two full weeks! I have seen two others.”

#9 Cut to the Chase Relic
Patch 06/25 Derek Jeter $150
– “well was supposed to be a patch but just a jersey. That is why this card is lower on the list.” (Brent actually pulled the 06/25 Jeter. The one pictured is similar to what Brent pulled.)

#8 The Greats Relic Patch 20/25 Ken Griffey, Jr. $78.66 – “two color patch more like a jersey seam but beautiful and young pic of The Kid.”

#7 The Greats Autograph redemption card numbered to 25 Nolan Ryan $175 – “thought this would be higher when starting to make this list but being a redemption brings it down a notch.”

#5 Letter Patch ONE OF ONE RA Dickey $173.50 – “actually one of the best-selling letter patches that isn’t Harper or Trout. He sells strong and has not had many cards available over the years.”

#4 Chasing History Autograph Stan Musial 13/25 $158.05 – “this would have been lower had he not just passed away – still was not a strong sell but a nice pic, nice memorabilia jersey, sticker auto was OK, but under circumstances acceptable of course.”

#3 The Greats Bat Relic numbered to 25 Babe Ruth $175 – “only the third Ruth bat I have ever pulled, and first in many years – still the Sultan of Swat.” (The one pictured is similar to what Brent pulled but not the same exact card)

#2 The Greats Bat Relic numbered to 25 Roberto Clemente $175 – “I think I hit one other Clemente memorabilia piece with Topps Triple Threads in 2006 – rare. It is above Ruth but only because it seems that there is more Ruth stuff out there, and just dig the picture too.” (The one pictured is similar to what Brent pulled.)

#1 World Series Autographed Patch 06/50 Buster Posey $330 (sale pending) – “not only my biggest selling card but other than Trout or Harper, hottest current non-rookie seller. Also #1 because a many number of World Series relics and autographs and autograph relics would fill up my 11-20 rankings as they are SUPER hot. Year after year they are some of the best-selling cards for series one especially for plain jersey swatch or sticker autographs, etc.”

And so there you have it. For those who have always wondered what kind of cards to expect out of an 80 case break, now you know. However, it needs to be noted that this break was terrible in Brent's opinion. Usually, Brent would (and should) hit at least one card that would sell for over $500 but he did not unfortunately.

I have to agree with Brent on the World Series cards. I pulled one from a pack last year of Edwin Jackson. Normally a relic of him would sell for less than $5 but because this was a World Series relic it sold for a lot more. Check out my Hall of Fame list to see what it sold for. It was my number one card for 2012.

Awesome pulls! I would expect better from 80 cases but this break was definitely below expectations.
