In a surprise announcement, Topps will be producing a special boxed set this year called 2015 Topps Heritage Baseball ’51 Collection. 2015 is already a big year for Topps Heritage baseball as Topps is bringing back the high number series to pack form. The limited edition '51 Collection box set will include all 104 base cards which mirrors the original offering back in 1951, along with 21 mini parallel cards for collectors to chase. As an added enticement, each factory sealed box set will include one autograph card.
Topps has stated that they will make every effort to acquire on-card signatures but there is the possibility of stickers in this product. Some collectors frown on the idea of sticker autographs, especially with the Topps Heritage brand. Topps Heritage has never had sticker autographs except in the Topps Heritage Minor League release.
Back in 1951, Topps produced these cards that came two to a pack and it only cost a penny. They were produced in two different series commonly known as blue backs and red backs. Here is a 1951 Topps red back wrapper followed by a blue back wrapper:
Blue backs were rarer than the red backs and generally are worth twice as much as red backs on average. Red backs had 52 players in the red back checklist and blue backs had 52 different players in the blue back checklist. Here is a pic of a 1951 Topps red back box followed by a blue back box:
· Red Back Parallel – 10 per box
· Blue Back Parallel – 5 per box
· Green Back Parallel – 3 per box
· Black Back Parallel – 2 per box
· Gold Back Parallel – 1 per box
Although the autograph subject list isn’t complete yet, Topps has announced that there will be up to 25 active stars that will be featured on a base card variation. Some of these players include these rookie sensations: Jacob deGrom, Jorge Soler, and Kris Bryant. Again, collectors will only find one autograph per box so there will not be many of them. These autographs can in the following parallels:
· Blue Back Parallel – sequentially #ed to 25.
· Green Back Parallel – sequentially #ed to 10.
· Black Back Parallel – sequentially #ed to 5.
Collectors can look to find these boxed sets available in October. For some Topps Heritage die hards, these sets will be nice additions to their complete set runs as currently Heritage has only been patterned after the 1952 through 1966 Topps designs. So what do you think of this box set? Love it? Hate it? I would like to hear your comments!
