On the Back: “Traded to the Giants during the winter, the veteran southpaw was once a right hander. He fractured his right arm as a boy and converted himself into a lefty. Max came up with the Cardinals in 1939 from Columbus. He had a trial in 1938, his second year in pro ball. With 20 shutouts to his credit, Max had his best years in 1942-43-44 with records of 13-8, 15-7, 17-12, and 6-0 in 1946. He runs a restaurant in the winter.”
