1953 Topps Checklist

Topps followed up their groundbreaking inaugural "Giant Size" set with more cards of the same size in 1953. The 1953 Topps baseball set features portraits on most of the cards, and although they are artistic renderings, they are so detailed and colorful that they are almost life-like. The majority of the front of the cards are taken up with the player portraits with a small information box at the bottom. This info box includes the name of the player, the position played, the team name and the team logo. The color of the boxes are red for American League players and black for National League players. The backs of the cards featured the card number inside of a baseball in the upper left corner, a facsimile autograph of the player in red ink, a "Dugout Quiz" trivia question and the usual player biographical information and stats from the previous year and career totals.

The 1953 set is numbered to 280, but six of the cards were never printed so there are actually only 274 cards in the set. No official reason has ever been given for the six missing cards, but the most likely theory is that they were victims of last minute signings with rival Bowman. Although the set is small, there are plenty of Hall of Famers to keep collectors interested. Key cards include #1 Jackie Robinson, #82 Mickey Mantle, #244 Willie Mays (one of the few cards in the set to show a full shot of the player, not just the portrait), #207 Whitey Ford, #76 Pee Wee Reese, #114 Phil Rizzuto, #54 Bob Feller, #27 Roy Campenella, #147 Warren Spahn and Topps only career era card of the great Satchel Paige, card #220. The artists did a masterful job on the renderings of the players, and the '53 set is considered by many collectors to be the most beautiful set ever produced by Topps. Interesting note: If you look closely at the background on some of the cards, you will see Topps advertisements on the outfield walls.

Errors, Variations and Short Prints: As with the previous year, the 1953 set was produced in several series and the last series consisting of card numbers 221-280 were printed in significantly lower numbers and are thus considered short prints. These 54 high number cards (all six of the cards that never made it to print are in this last series) are the toughest part of the set to complete, but there are a few lower number cards that are also considered short prints due to the way the printing sheets were done. These lower number short prints include #61 Early Wynn, #81 Joe Black and several others. Errors include #220 Satchel Paige (name misspelled as Satchell on the front) and #219 Pete Runnels (picture on front is actually Don Johnson--no, not the one from Miami Vice fame). Neither error was corrected by Topps.
