1955 Topps Checklist

The year 1955 would bring about some major changes in the world of baseball card collecting.  Topps once again released a masterful set, but threw a new twist into their popular cards...a complete set of horizontal cards.  In a strange twist of fate (coincidence or not???), rival Bowman also made their 1955 set a horizontally aligned set.  However, Topps had now taken a significant lead in market share and 1955 would be the last year of Bowman as a rival.  Topps would buy out their rival later in the year.

The 1955 Topps set once again featured beautiful artwork, vibrant colors a portrait shot and a full body action shot on the front of each card.  Unlike 1954 though, the action shot would also be in color this time.  The large team logo's appeared again at the top of the cards, while the bottom of the cards had a colored rectangular box with the players name in white or red letters, the team name and position in black, yellow or red letters and a facsimile autograph above the box.  The backs of the cards were similar to previous years, with the card number in the top corner inside of a baseball graphic, statistics for the players career and previous year, biographical info and a cartoon area that gave short blurbs about the player.  The set is numbered to 210, but four cards were not issued so there are only 206 cards in the complete set.

Although there are a few great players missing due to contractual oblications, namely Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Bob Feller, the 1955 set is still loaded with collector favorites and what would become three of the hobbies most sought after rookie cards...Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax and Harmon Killebrew.  A scarcer high number set also made it's return and consists of card numbers 161-210.  Below is a list of key cards in the set, and you can click on the card image to search for that card.
