1956 Topps Checklist

The 1956 Topps set marked the second year in a row where Topps went with a horizontal card design. The cards remained the same size and feature a somewhat similar appearance to the 1955 cards, with both a head and shoulders portrait shot, a large action shot and a facsimile autograph on the front of the card. The main difference with the 1956 cards is that the player name, position and team appear at the top of the card instead of the bottom. This info is in a rectangular box that is in either the top left corner or top right corner of the card. The box is divided into two, with the top half having a different background color than the bottom half. The top half contains the player's name, while the bottom half has the player's position and team name. The backs of the cards feature the card number inside of a baseball, biographical information and a cartoon rendering.

There are 340 cards in the 1956 Topps set plus two checklist cards, and cards 1-180 have both white back and gray back versions. Gray backs are slightly rarer in the first 100 cards, and white backs are slightly rarer in cards 101-180.

With no Bowman competition, Topps had free reign with the stars of the game. The most notable benefit to collectors of this is the return of Mickey Mantle to Topps. Interesting points with the 1956 set include the introduction of team cards, and the first two cards in the set feature the AL and NL commissioners, William Harridge and Warren Giles.
