The Topps Sell Sheet / Photo Project — 1971

1971 Topps is one of the most condition sensitive sets of all time. The black borders are easy to chip and when they are chipped, the white specks are really noticeable. This leads to another problem that collectors need to be aware of and I learned this the hard way several years ago. I have noticed that some people will try to upgrade the condition of these cards by using a black magic marker to touch up the corners to make them look pristine. By holding the cards at just the right angle, one can tell if this practice has been done as the ink bleeds through. I bought a set off of EBay several years ago and I was very disappointed as more than half of the set had touched up corners. The seller would not refund my money because he said all of his cards are sold “as is”. He claimed that there were too many people sending him back cards for refunds that were not his. By him saying this, I felt he was insinuating that I was doing the same thing. When buying 1971 Topps cards, please be sure you buy them from someone with a great reputation and from someone who offers a return policy.

I am lucky to have been able to put together a 1971 Topps set after carefully buying from reputable dealers. My set is in EX+ condition and is one of my favorites. 1971 was also the year I was born so this set has a lot of meaning to me. I wish I had a sell sheet from 1971, but I do not unfortunately. Here is a picture of a 1971 Topps wrapper and a 1971 Topps box:

Do you have any old sell sheets? My goal is to have one from each year 1951 to present but I do not know if this is even possible. I have been looking on EBay, Google images, and certain auction houses. If you know of another place I should be looking, please let me know.

Thank you for reading my blog. Stay tuned tomorrow as I continue to bring you news and notes from the world of Topps baseball cards.
