The Topps Sell Sheet / Photo Project — 1980

Back in 1980, my mom would buy me two packs of 1980 Topps cards every time she would go to the grocery store. As a nine year old kid, I enjoyed opening the packs and seeing what players I got to add to my collection while chomping on the included stick of gum. My favorite cards in the set were the all-star cards. I remember getting several Carl Yastrzemski cards and trading some of them for Nolan Ryan. Back then, no one knew who Rickey Henderson was. By the late 1980’s Rickey Henderson was the most popular card in the set and remains so to this day. I remember purchasing a 1980 Topps pack in 1990 for $10 which at the time was the most I ever spent on one pack of cards. Inside was a Rickey Henderson rookie card. I was so happy that I even chewed the 10 year old stick of gum. There wasn’t much flavor to it and it basically just disintegrated in my mouth. Sometime during the 1990’s I bought the rest of the 1980 Topps set and I have it stored in a binder. The binders I use are fully enclosed so it keeps dust out and the plastic sheets are very secure inside so they do not warp when standing upright. In the front of my binder, I have the following 1980 Topps sell sheet:

In addition to the sell sheet, I also have a picture of a Topps pack wrapper and a Topps wax box. Here are those pictures:

If you have any sell sheets, please let me know. I can be reached easily at parker94ttu@gmail.com. My goal is to have one sell sheet for each year that Topps produced cards which are the years 1951 to present. I have contacted Topps to see if they have kept any over the years but they told me that they do not. They have sold a couple through their “Topps Vault” account on EBay. Maybe if I keep looking and asking people, I will have a complete collection of these – if they even exist for each year.

Love your sell-sheet project, just curious but do you have some sort of display set up with all your sell-sheets in your collection room? Pics would be awesome!

  2. Craig says:

Thanks! If I had all sell sheets (one from each year) I would make a display out of them. For now, I just use the sell sheets basically as covers for my notebooks which house my Topps sets.
